An analysis by iMerit suggests that 29 of the 50 U.S. states have dedicated positions for Chief Data Officers. Of these, 5 states namely Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine and Massachusetts have the position open as on 21st November 2020. For states that do not have dedicated CDOs on staff, the function tends to fall to the Chief Information Officer.
